SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT:
In June, we celebrate Pride to honor and be in solidarity with the LGBTQSIA+ community. During this time it is important to keep both yourself and others safe from hate/bias/violence. We do not want to deter anyone from being a part of the Pride festivities in Portland due to safety concerns. If you experience anything unsettling please report it to Portland United Against Hate (PUAH) at reporthatepdx.com or contact our partner Q Center. Click here to see a full list of PUAH Partners that can provide help with reporting a hate or bias incident, social or legal services, and provide other support needs.
Some safety tips:

  • If possible, have a buddy with you at all Pride events.

  • Let someone know where and with whom you will be during the day and inform someone if your plans change.

  • Charge your electronic devices so you can easily get in touch with friends & family and write down phone numbers in case your phone dies.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • If you feel threatened or unsafe please remove yourself from the area and go somewhere safe.

  • Alert event staff or organizers if you see any unsettling behavior.

  • If you see someone being harassed or threatened speak out loudly and call out disruptive behavior if you feel safe doing so. Otherwise, inform someone ASAP.

  • If issues involve police you should record, observe or verbally intervene. Do not engage in physical violence.

  • In case of emergencies, call 911.

Our hearts go out to the Otis/Titi Gulley and their family. We are in solidarity with this family and are grieving with you. Stay resilient.

"On the afternoon of May 27, police officers found the body of a Black, queer, homeless person hanging from a tree in Rocky Butte Park...Weeks after her death, Gulley's family is still struggling to find answers about the mysterious circumstances surrounding the end of her life. Since the night of Gulley's death, they have found the PPB to be unreceptive to their concerns. Kenya Robinson, Gulley’s mother, told the Mercury she believes some of this indifference has to do with Gulley's identity."

Juan Mayoral was working as the PUAH staff with Latino Network since the begging of this year, 2019. His role will end on June 30th when the rest of the PUAH grant ends. Juan did an exceptional job in making sure he carried the PUAH work to the community. He facilitated several Know Your Rights/PUAH sessions. He coordinated trainings, and took on some hate crime caseloads to support the victims with the needed resources. Thank you to Juan Mayoral for his service with the PUAH work at Latino Network.
