Portland United Against Hate (PUAH) is a coalition of 70 + community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, and the City of Portland's Office of Community & Civic Life. The Portland United Against Hate Coalition is seeking to hire an Independent Contractor to coordinate, strengthen and visibilize the work of the PUAH Coalition. This involves the creative coordination and collaborative development of coalition members, grant partners, and volunteers to build upon PUAH’s successes.

Commitment: We are seeking a part-time contractor (estimated at a flexible 20 hours/week) for a one-year relationship (ideally, July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020)
Contract Budget: $50,000 (see note below)
Oversight: Contractor will report to the Coalition Co-Chairs.
Submission Deadline: Send email with your resume and answers to questions below to PortlandUnitedAgainstHate@gmail.com with Independent Contractor as the subject by noon on 5/31/2019. Submissions after this time will not be accepted or reviewed by hiring panel.
 
Process:
Step 1: Submit a resume detailing your work experience in building organizations, coordinating coalitions, facilitating meetings, and/or working on social justice issues, especially anti-hate violence (2 pages max); and submit your answers to the following questions (2 pages max):
For each answer you are encouraged to include professional, volunteer, and/or lived experiences.

  1. Describe your experience and/or interest in working with the Portland United Against Hate Coalition?

  2. Describe your experience and role in working with a coalition or in a multi-organizational collaborative project.

  3. Choose one example from the list of “Possible work, goals, and benchmarks” below and explain what experience you have or what approach you would take to accomplish that goal or benchmark.

  4. What is your experience in working with communities most heavily impacted by hate incidents and hate violence (for example, communities of color, black communities, queer and trans* communities, Muslim, Jewish, and other religious communities, immigrant and refugee communities, and/or community members with disabilities)?

Step 2: Interviews
Step 3: Mutual Agreement to work together.
Step 4: Development of a scope of work for this contract.
It is expected that the contractor would submit a proposal and work plan for how to accomplish this goal with quarterly benchmarks. Contractor would develop this in consultation with the PUAH Co-Chairs and PUAH Coalition-wide Steering Committee.
Possible work, goals, and benchmarks:

  • Increase engagement of coalition membership in coalition activities by 25%.

  • Facilitate monthly Steering Committee meetings and quarterly membership gatherings.

  • Coordinate the Coalition in a campaign. Campaign to be determined by the Coalition.

  • Support strategic organizational partnerships in the community.

  • Coordinate information and collaboration across the coalition.

  • Fundraise towards goal of enough funds for grants to community-based partners and/or hire other contractors.

  • Work with the Coalition on updating and expanding the Strategic Plan.


Logistics: PUAH Coalition is securing an office in inner Portland. The office will be accessible for mobility devices and available for use by the Contractor as needed. Contractor must provide their own computer, phone, and transportation. Contractor will be paid monthly based on reports about the status of the goals and benchmarks.
 
Note: This is a direct fee payment for an independent contractor and does not include benefits. While we anticipate that this will be the amount of the contract, the actual number is dependent on the City of Portland final 2019-20 budget, which will be authorized in June.
